A cult has always been a part of human history, and we have witnessed all sorts of cults from a cult in a small tribe to cult on social media with millions of followers. People use euphemism for the cult figure as an influencer, leader, activist, celebrity, motivational guru, sportsman, and many more. The cult has been thriving on social media exponentially, and one tweet, one Instagram story, one Facebook post, one YouTube video can make people outraged, and the extreme outcome is inevitable. The earlier cult was based on word of mouth tactics, and now we have social media where brand manager, account manager, ad companies can do it for money and reach would be far deeper, and unimaginable -all you need a social media account.
In order to sell mediocre ideas, products and services, cult followers are required otherwise, why would people defend the ideologies blindly? If there is anything extreme on social media, it will gain the undeniable support or opposition – that’s the beauty of having a cult audience.
Every cult has emerged to bind society and create harmony but, ended up creating division in society. And if the ideology does not match with a cult group then, it will be discarded.
We live in a social world where extreme outrageousness gets more attention than the irrational views, and we are not far from having a clinic called “Cult free clinic” where people will treat like drug addicts.
