Comparison of Unequal

“Comparison is a slippery slope to jealousy.” Danielle LaPorte

The comparison starts with doubt, whether you doubt yourself or others. It is indeed a double-edged sword, and you can’t swing when you are in doubt. We always compare apples vs oranges to arrive at a decision – Which is better?

Why do we compare?

Well, we compare because we desire to feel good about ourselves and eventually, we succumb to unhappiness. You wish that you can do better than others, you are incapable. You will never compare yourself with the equal ones either you will go with the best or worst. The immoral form of comparison is like you are racing and you are watching competitor rather than your path – that is self-destructive.

Comparison in a social media world

Pre social media world, we used to compare with the people we knew, like friends, family and neighbours but now we are comparing with the people who are staying thousands of miles away, and the best part is – you even don’t know them personally. That has created the storm of comparison and resulted in a trap where an android phone user thinks that the iPhone user’s life is better.

Is comparison that bad?

The comparison is an essential ingredient of motivation where you can achieve your goals while comparing with others. When you are comparing, don’t do it for the dopamine but the personal improvement. Cricket is a competitive sport and, Kohli is compared with many other contemporary players like Smith, Williamson, Root and Rohit yet, Kohli does not fall in the trap of comparison game. The comparison makes him better at his game.

Comparison is a part of the ethical dilemma, no matter how hard you try to avoid it, but you will compare yourself with others. Happiness depends on the outcome of the comparison, and make sure you are on the right side of the spectrum just, like Kohli.
